The apple never falls far from the tree...

I was off to pick up Ella from dancing and I promised Alana when I got home I would make Yo Yo's for her. She had tried them at a friend's house a few weeks before and thought them yummy. My usual reply was "we can do that"... It's become a catch cry with me, I seem to think my girls can do or make anything...
She asked me to leave the recipe with her to look at before I went... I got back home to this!!!

My clever girl had made them AND what it impressed me the most is she said "mum I remembered to take photos for your blog"... well I beamed with pride... there was my girl supporting me little addiction to blogging!!!!

Note the little blooms for decoration, the glass of milk as a serving suggestion, two shots from different angles, man she had it all covered, the before icing and the after icing... the sliding of one biscuit off the other to properly show the filling... this girl is going places... The Grasshopper has surpassed the Master (if only I was one) and all is good!!!
Like Mother, like Daughter...

Biscuits
185g butter
60g icing sugar
60g custard powder
185g plain flour

Icing
2 tablespoons of butter, softened
4 tablespoons of icing sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

Pre-heat oven to 160 c.
For the biscuits, cream the butter and icing sugar until pale. Sift your dry ingredients and mix into your creamed butter and sugar mix.

Roll teaspoonfuls into balls and place on tray. With a fork, flatten your biscuit mix slightly by dragging the fork across, thus giving a pattern too.

Bake in oven for 15-18 minutes.
Leave on tray for 5 minutes to cool slightly. Slide off tray onto wire rack to cool completely.

Icing
Cream all ingredients together and use to sandwich two biscuits together, giving you a Yo Yo.

Enjoy.

Aw, Vida, what a lovely thing for your girl to do - especially, as you say, by also supporting your blogging habit and taking beautiful photos! You lucky thing :)

DISASTER!

Maybe it was me singing along to Cher's greatest hits .. but mine failed. Maybe I put a little too much flour but the end mixture was all crumbly and hard to stay together. Are the measurements right?

I'm sitting here staring at baked crumbs :-(

Vida said...

Paul, I can't wait for you to meet my girls, you really will love them, they are the best thing I have ever done in my life!!! Vida x

Mr Disaster, (Anthony) I have checked and double checked that the measurements are right. It's not Cher, it's you, actually it because you're..... NO NO NO NO NO, honey, I have no idea what you did but PLEASE try again, they will soothe your soul, sugar always does that for me. Maybe try it in ounces. 6oz butter, 2oz icing sugar, 2oz custard powder, 6oz plain flour... Vida x x x

I think I put in too much flour :-( I didn't bother putting in the icing as they are mis-shaped. But they taste like yo-yo's .. just a bit floury.

What should the consistence be once eveything is mixed together? Like shortbread?

It is wonderful for your daughter to have the love of cooking and baking as you do Vida. She even took photos!!!!

I love yo-yos, Alana's look great, so professional. So, is it a fight at your place for stove time, but none for kitchen sink time?

Vida said...

Anthony, Alana says yes, like shortbread, quite firm, should be able to roll it into balls then flatten out. I am happy they taste good. Alana says she too misread the recipe and put double the sugar and custard powder but they tasted good anyway! Vida x

Bellini valli, hello and welcome!! I was beaming with pride, my girls are very supportive of me, I guess somewhere along the line I did something right and taught to be kind to others. I was really impressed she remembered to do it all!! Vida x

Vida said...

Neil, you read us like a book!!! No one ever fights me for the dishes!!! I do sometimes rant and rave and they help, can't expect too much from teenage girls! Vida x

Hi Vida,
Your daughter is clever indeed! And what a bonus that she remembered to even take photos for your blog.

Funnily enough, I say "we can do that" a lot to my partner when he wants to buy something from the bakery or cafe. ;-)
